group lessons

At Taranaki School of Music, we believe music is meant to be shared. Learning in a group environment gives students the opportunity to develop their skills alongside others, creating a supportive, motivating and enjoyable musical experience.Group lessons combine expert teaching with the excitement of making music together. Students learn not only how to play their instrument, but how to listen, collaborate and become confident musicians.
🎵 Build Confidence
Learning alongside others helps students feel supported as they develop new skills. They can celebrate successes together, learn from each other and gain confidence performing in front of their peers.
🎵 Learn Through Collaboration
Students learn valuable social skills through music-making: taking turns, supporting others, giving and receiving feedback and working towards a shared goal.
🎵 Develop Ensemble Skills
Great musicians don’t just play notes — they listen and respond to others. Group learning teaches students important skills such as keeping rhythm, following a leader, balancing their sound and working as part of a team.
🎵 Experience the Joy of Performing
Playing music with others is one of the most rewarding parts of being a musician. Group learning provides regular opportunities to play together, develop performance skills and experience the excitement of making music as an ensemble.
🎵 Stay Motivated and Inspired
Being surrounded by other young musicians creates a sense of belonging and encouragement. Students see others progressing, share challenges and celebrate achievements together.
🎵 Create Lifelong Connections
Many lifelong friendships begin through shared musical experiences. Being part of a musical community helps students feel connected and inspired to continue their musical journey.
Every student is unique, and different learning approaches suit different people. Group lessons provide a wonderful balance of individual support and shared musical experiences, helping students grow as both musicians and individuals. At Taranaki School of Music, our goal is simple: to help students discover the joy of music, develop confidence and become musicians who love to play. At Taranaki School of Music, group learning is a deliberate choice. Our experienced teachers believe that music is not just about learning to play the right notes — it is about becoming a confident musician who can listen, collaborate, communicate and share music with others. From the very first lesson, students begin developing the skills needed to play with other musicians. They learn to keep time, listen carefully, follow instructions, support their classmates and experience the excitement of creating something together.Music has always been a shared experience, and learning in a group helps students discover that they are part of something bigger than themselves.
One of the greatest benefits of group learning is that students learn from and inspire each other. Seeing a classmate master a new skill, overcome a challenge or perform with confidence encourages others to keep going. Our teachers carefully structure groups so that students are learning alongside others at a similar stage, while still recognising that every student develops at their own pace.In an ensemble, every player has an important role. The success of the group depends on each musician bringing their best effort, preparation and enthusiasm. When everyone comes ready to learn, the whole group grows together.
The Importance of Practice Between Lessons
Learning an instrument is a journey, and regular practice is the key to progress.Lessons provide students with expert guidance, new skills and goals to work towards. Practice between lessons is where those skills become stronger and more natural. Even a short amount of regular practice makes a difference. Students who practise consistently:
  • Build confidence more quickly
  • Remember skills more easily
  • Develop independence as musicians
  • Experience the satisfaction of seeing their own progress
Practice doesn’t need to be perfect — it just needs to be regular. A few focused minutes each day is often more valuable than a longer session once a week. Our teachers choose group learning because they have seen the incredible benefits it brings. Students don’t just learn an instrument; they learn perseverance, teamwork, confidence and the joy of making music with others. At Taranaki School of Music, every student contributes to the musical journey. When students prepare, participate and encourage each other, everyone’s experience becomes richer — and the music becomes something truly special.
